How to Brush Your Dog’s Teeth

Put that happy smile on your pooch’s face!

Our dog’s overall health and well-being is definitely an important priority when we want to keep him healthy, energetic, and full of life. Keeping him in the pink of health also means providing him with the best dental care. For some of us, though, brushing our dog’s teeth is a big challenge. Don’t fret! Caring for our dog’s teeth need not be a hair-pulling situation. It can be a simple routine that may also be a great bonding activity for you and your dog.

Keep your dog’s dental health in check with these easy-to-follow steps on brushing:

1. Take it slow

Don’t rush into introducing your dog to the wonders of good brushing. Just gradually incorporate it into his daily routine, making sure that the initial brushing sessions are very brief while ensuring that your dog responds positively to the experience. Remember: Do not, under any circumstances, be too persistent about making that toothbrush go into his mouth, nor restrain him too much during the process. More importantly, give him a pat and a warm hug after each brushing session for a job well done.

2. Associate brushing with a good meal

So how do you get that toothbrush into your pooch’s mouth without getting any violent reactions? Simple. Have a beef bouillon (or any delicious treat) ready and soak your finger with its beefy goodness. Gently run your finger onto your dog’s mouth and teeth. Remember to keep this phase short but sweet for your dog.

3. Wrap it up

Once you’ve established that pleasant experience for your dog, it’s time to introduce him to the gauze. Wrap your soaked finger with one and scrub your dog’s teeth gently, using circular strokes.

4. Get him his very first toothbrush

When your dog has become comfortable with cleaning his teeth using gauze, you can then start brushing his teeth using a toothbrush specifically made for pets. Keep in mind to use only those with soft bristles and a toothpaste designed for dogs. Never, ever use toothpaste that people ordinarily use, as this can be harmful to your dog’s digestive tract.
